ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE (EPB)

The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) system utilizes an electric motor to engage the parking brake.

Applying the Parking Brake

Depress the brake pedal and pull up the EPB switch . Ensure that the indicator light is illuminated on the Instrument Cluster.

Releasing the Parking Brake

To release the EPB automatically ensure the ignition is ON, all doors and liftgate are closed and the seat belt is fastened. Then depress the brake pedal and shift the lever from Park to Reverse or Drive. The indicator light will turn OFF to indicate EPB has been released.

To release EPB manually:

Quick Tips:

  • Pull up and hold the EPB switch again to increase brake pressure if parked on a decline or incline
  • When leaving your keys with parking lot attendants or valet, make sure to inform them how to operate the EPB

Reminders:

  • As a bulb check, the EPB malfunction indicator will illuminate for approximately 3 seconds when the ignition switch is turned on
  • If the warning light does not illuminate temporarily or remains continuously lit, take your vehicle to an authorized Kia dealer and have the system checked
  • A click or electric brake motor sound may be heard while operating or releasing the EPB. This is normal and indicate the EPB is functioning properly
  • EPB may automatically engage if the driver’s door is opened while driving at approximately 3 mph or under
  • If the vehicle is turned off while Auto Hold is active, the EPB may engage automatically. However, if the engine is turned off and the EPB switch is pressed within one second, the EPB may not engage
